Another of my violin lessons for the beginner! This time we look at ways of learning a proper downbow stroke.
For a strong sound you need to feel you are playing into the string. When you are playing downbow it should feel as if you are stroking or rubbing into the string (pretend you are drawing a smile, or polishing an elephant’s tusk).
Always stroke into the string to achieve a big sound. If you are not sure you are getting the right movement do the following exercise: Put down your violin, then hold out the left arm in front of you. With your right hand stroke downwards on your arm. Feel the movement and do this a few times.
